1788 The First Fleet brought sugar cane to Australia. 1821 Unsuccessful attempts were made to grow sugar cane as a crop at Port Macquarie, New South Wales. 1842 The first sugar refinery was built in Sydney to refine imported sugar. 1862 Captain Louis Hope and John Buhot established a sugar cane plantation near Brisbane. Hope operated Australia's first commercial sugar mill.

History of St. John Sugar Cane Plantations The history of St. John unfortunately wouldn't be complete without the slavery that occurred on the island's sugar cane plantations. These plantations were a main source of income for St. John, and windmills and horses were used to process sugar cane, guided by slaves who first cut the sugar cane.

Eagle & Phenix has been a part of Columbus since early in our city history. Cotton milling operations began on this site when William H. Young established the Eagle Mills. In 1860 when Mr. Young absorbed the nearby Howard Factory, Eagle Mills became the second largest mill in Georgia.

Year Erected: 1957 Marker Text: On the banks of Carnochan Creek, a short distance East of here, are the ruins of a famous Sugar Mill and Rum Distillery operated early in the 19th century. These buildings, constructed of tabby by William Carnochan on his huge sugar plantation at "The Thicket," followed closely plans laid out by Thomas Spalding of Sapelo.
