The exfoliation of apparently pure true vermiculites that contain no potassium can also be explained by a mosaic structure, consisting of vermiculite and chlorite, achieved by nothing more than a switch in the nature of the interlayer from hydrated exchangeable cation interlayers in vermiculite to brucite-like interlayer hydroxide in chlorite.

PROCESS FOR EXFOLIATION OF VERMICULITE. This invention relates to a process for making aqueous dispersions of vermiculite lamellae or platelet. It is known that aqueous suspensions of swollen vermiculite ore particles can be prepared by substituting monovalent inorganic cations such as Li. +> or Na+> for exchangeable cations in the ore (for example, Mg2>+> cations), followed by a subsequent ...

This mechanism provides a common explanation for the exfoliation of 'Vermiculite' by thermal methods or by treatment with H 2 O 2. Paradoxically, one sample which consists of pure vermiculite, in the mineralogical sense of the term, demonstrates that pure vermiculite does not and should not exhibit the property of exfoliation.

• The site was an exfoliation facility that processed more than 100,000 tons of vermiculite ore from Libby mine. Exfoliation, a processing method in which ore is heated and "popped," is expected to have released more asbestos than other processing methods.

Vermiculite contaminated with Libby Amphibole asbestos was shipped to nearly 300 processing plants around the country. Upon delivery, the ore was exfoliated. Upon delivery, the ore was exfoliated. Exfoliation is a process in which vermiculite ore is heated at high temperatures to expand or "pop" it.

• The site was an exfoliation facility that processed more than 100,000 tons of vermiculite ore from the Libby mine. Exfoliation processing of vermiculite involves heating vermiculite at high temperatures to expand it; higher quantities of asbestos are released during exfoliation processing than in other processing methods.

In addition, an aluminum vermicu- lite prepared directly from a vermiculite ore without prior exfoliation had a capacity of 7.3 mg P04/gm (compared to about 9 mg/gm for exfoliated material). Vermiculites containing cations other than Al were also prepared. These included Fe(lll), Fe(ll), La(lll), and Cu(ll).

Vermiculite ore is mined using open-pit methods. Beneficiation includes screening, flotation, drying in rotary or fluid bed dryers, and expansion by exposure to high heat. All mined vermiculite is dried and sized at the mine site prior to exfoliation. Crude Ore Processing - Figure 11.28-1 is a process flow diagram for vermiculite processing.
